The growing English fan site for Japan’s most ambitious rhythm game, Ongeki!

What is Ongeki?

Ongeki (Technically stylized as O.N.G.E.K.I.), is Sega’s 3rd music game in the ‘GekiChuMai’ series.

The gameplay is like many music games, where you must tap or hold notes to the rhythm game. However, you must also use the lever on the machine to control your chosen characters – some notes require ‘flicks’, quick movement of the lever left or right. You also use the lever to collect bells and dodge bullets, something very unique, and different to other music games. Songs also contain a battle system, the first half against Ongeki Nekos, and at a set point in time in the song, switches to the ‘Boss’ of the song.

To clear the song, you must deal Over Damage to the boss by reducing it’s HP to 0 by playing well, and having your character cards levelled up. Over Damage contributes to your final Battle Score, which depends entirely on damage. Hitting 0 HP on a song yourself will cause you to lose, while clearing the song without dealing enough damage results in a draw.

A separate score is given for accuracy called Technical Score, this is the more traditional score for a music game.

The game is yet to leave Japan officially, but this hasn’t stopped the game from having a growing English community for the game who are fond of the game. This website will attempt to archive information related to the game before it gets lost to time, lost in old tweets and obscure Japanese articles.

As of writing, Wikipedia currently doesn’t even have a page for the game in English! Let us hope that some day this game may have an international version.
